The history is steeped in distinct culture and traditions in present day Antigua is evident in aspects such as music and language. Most of Antiguan’s descend from slaves who were bought to the island many centuries ago. 
 

Language

The official language of Antigua is English. There are a number of islanders who speak creolized language and use African sayings. Words have derived from West African origin and are popular in the region.
 

Carnival

Celebrate the abolishment of slavery in this vibrant celebration in Antigua. Carnival holds many festivities every July and August with live music, colourful costumes, parades and pageants. Let’s not also forget the great Caribbean food too!
 

Music

Antiguan music has an important role on the island. Hear the sounds of the steel drums or steel pans resonating in Antigua and enjoy the wonderful reggae and calypso music. Calypso is the oldest form of music and was used by slaves who used it as a form of communication.

Antiguans are great devotees to Cricket. They have immense passion for the sport and it is played all around the island. The island is famed for its excellent cricketers such as Sir Vivian Richards, Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose to name a few.
